The Northern Maltings, Ware, Hertfordshire

Summary

W R Harrison Brickwork was AG Surveying’s first ever client. The company owner, Bill, initially contacted AG Surveying (AGS) for assistance in pricing up a shell and core package for the conversion of an old Malt House in Ware, Herts into six residential units. This was the largest and most complicated project that the client had been asked to price up until this point, as W R Harrison Brickwork was a relatively new start-up.

The works

AGS Director, Greg, visited site with the client initially to survey the existing structure and determine what works were needed to fulfil the design intent for the shell and core package. Greg compiled a pricing schedule that detailed and quantified all of the works that were going to be required and he then contacted all possible suppliers for material quotations. Once all of this had been completed, Greg spent a day with Bill to determine the following:

  1. Labour cost: how long it would take Bill and his workforce to undertake each element of works and in-turn, how much it would cost him
  2. What access, plant and tools would be needed for each task
  3. What muck away and skips would be required
  4. What access, management and prelim expenses would be required to deliver the project

Once all of this had been considered, AGS and the client worked together to determine what he would charge the client – including overheads to consider and profit he could expect the project to generate.

The outcome

The client secured the project and AGS was appointed as the Quantity Surveyor and Project Managing Consultancy for the project. The team assisted Bill in delivering the project on time and exceeding his initial profit aspirations. In fact, the developer was so happy with the work that AGS and the client later priced and secured the landscaping package and boundary walls for the same scheme and W R H Brickwork have since built a long-standing relationship with the client.
